August 2016, Iturup Island, Sakhalin Region: Derek Norberg for Council for U.S.-Russia Relations spoke on the importance of, and prospects for improving, U.S.-Russian relations at the RosMolodezh “Iturup Forum” of some 100 young Russian and international participants.


July 2016, San Francisco, California: 21st annual meeting Russian American Pacific Partnership with 85 attendees. The meeting was a tremendous success and afforded a valuable meeting between California Governor Jerry Brown and the regional delegation heads from Sakhalin, Sakha (Yakutia), Chukotka, and Primorskiy Territory. The positive dialogue across a wide range of issues allowed the participants to advance a series of recommendations on improved cooperation.

April 2016, Moscow, Russia: Meetings with U.S. Embassy personnel and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economic Development on coordination planning for the 21st annual meeting Russian American Pacific Partnership. Subsequent travel to Yakutsk, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on the proposal they host the 22nd RAPP annual meeting.

October 7-8, 2015, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia: 20th Anniversary Annual Meeting Russian American Pacific Partnership with approximately 80 attendees. Despite difficulties in relations, the meeting was a tremendous success providing constructive dialogue on a wide range of issues. According to Russia’s Minister of Economic Development Ulyukayev, the significance of RAPP is even greater in the current conditions. 

Through 2015, Council for U.S.-Russia Relations contributed numerous articles on bilateral relations published in major Russian news outlets including ITAR-TASS and Deita. Articles on Council website Home page.   July 21, 2015, K&L Gates, Seattle, Washington: A Special address by the Honorable Sergey Kislyak, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States. Attended by 40 business representatives. 

June 2015, Washington D.C., Moscow, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Khabarovsk: Separate meetings by Council President Norberg with U.S. State Department, U.S. Department of Commerce, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Tefft, senior Sakhalin Regional Government officials, and Khabarovsk business association leaders on preparations for the 2015 RAPP 20th anniversary annual meeting.

15 April, 2015: University of Washington. Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies. Derek Norberg, Council for U.S.-Russia Relations spoke on panel addressing Ukraine and Russia: Is There Any Way Out?

27 March, 2015: RUSSIA FORUM, New York. Council (Norberg) spoke on economic cooperation, the effects of sanctions and the path towards normalization of relations. Russia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak participated.

February 5, 2015: Seattle Metro Chamber of Commerce, Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle: Participated on panel addressing Falling Oil Prices: Impact on global economies. Attended by over 30 business professionals.

9-10 September, 2014: 19th Annual Meeting Russian American Pacific Partnership, San Diego, California. The meeting was a success demonstrating that in times of difficult bilateral relations, the Russian Far East and the West Coast of the United States afford a wide array of opportunities for constructive dialogue on areas of mutual interest and benefit.

Seattle, Washington, November 6, 2013: Attended the celebration of Russian Federation National Unity Day at the Consulate General of Russia in Seattle meeting with Consul General Andrey Yushmanov.

San Francisco, California, 1 November, 2013: Attended the Russian Federation National Unity Day celebration at the San Francisco Consulate General of the Russian Federation, meeting with Consul General Sergey Petrov and Head of Trade Representation in San Francisco Oleg Slepov.

Houston, Texas, 29-30 October, 2013: Derek Norberg representing the Council attended the USRBC Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, meeting with senior representatives of the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, as well as with business representatives including Council member ExxonMobil.

Shoreline, WA. October 24, 2013: Derek Norberg was the featured speaker presenting on Russia's World View as part of Shoreline Community College's Global Affairs Center "No One's World: A Symposium on Evolving Worldviews" series.

September 17-18, 2013, Vladivostok, Russia: The 18th annual meeting of the Russian American Pacific Partnership (RAPP) attracted 100 participants and generated very productive discussions on a wide range of issues and ideas for accelerating U.S.-Russian cooperation and commerce across the Pacific. Delegations from Kamchatka, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Sakhalin, and Alaska joined with the Primorsky Territory (host). Meeting details can be found on the RAPP pages of this website.

August 27, 2013, University of Washington, Seattle: Derek Norberg was a featured speaker at the opening session of the Russian-American Youth Summit. Council for U.S.-Russia Relations met with RAYA organizers on several occasions providing them consultation on their meeting planning.

May 13, 2013, Embassy of the Russian Federation, Washington D.C.: Derek Norberg presented as part of an expert panel reviewing issues related to direct passenger flights between the Russian Far East and the U.S. West Coast. The session was led by Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and was attended by Robert Letteney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Council members and RAPP sponsors InterPacific Aviation and Marketing and AirCompany Yakutia were in attendance and presented on their Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia - Anchorage, Alaska flight service, now in its second year of operation. Among the attendees were representatives of Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, S7 airlines and Vladivostok Air, and the D.C. Representatives of Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State and Governor Parnell of Alaska.

May 3rd, 2013, Port of Seattle Commission Chambers: "RUSSIA - A Business and Legal Update", by Arthur George, Partner with Baker & McKenzie and Margaret Niles, Partner with K&L Gates. Topics included new Russian anti-corruption legislation and compliance measure requirements and the Cyprus financial crisis and its impacts. 22 persons attendees.

Seattle, WA. March 18, 2013: Council made a presentation before a delegation of Russian regional government officials visiting Seattle with the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) with the Seattle World Trade Center.  The group was studying public-private partnerships for Innovation in Russia. 

March 5th, 2013, at the K&L Gates Conference Room, Seattle, WA: Council hosted an evening presentation by Professor Andranik Migranyan, Director of the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation, providing his perspectives on Russian business and politics and the trajectory of U.S.-Russian relations. 20 Seattle business professionals attended.

Seattle, WA. May 16, 2012: Derek Norberg, in tandem with John Lowe of Google, presented on Issues in Russia as an Emerging Market at Expeditors Global Logistics Council 2012 event. Mr. Norberg's presentation addresses historic issues with Russian Customs, Russia's WTO accession and tariff reductions, and a practical review of Russian documentation requirements and shipping recommendations. Seattle, WA, Moscow, Russia, Washington D.C., April 2012:  Council shared perspectives with Washington State U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and with the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on the planned U.S. deployment of a missile defense system in Europe. A current detriment to U.S.-Russian relations, the Europe-based missile defense system may undermine the balance of nuclear deterrence and launch a missile defense race neither the U.S. or Russia can afford. The ultimate value of this proposed deployment may yet lie in its serving as a basis for a U.S.-Russian compromise better factoring the security issues of all sides.

Moscow, Russia April 5-6, 2012: Derek Norberg held meetings pursuant to planning for the 17th annual meeting of the Russian American Pacific Partnership (RAPP) with U.S. Embassy officials, separately with Russia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Ryabkov and finally with Dmitry Sazhin, Deputy Director Department of the Americas and other ministry officials at the Ministry of Economic Development.

Seattle, WA. February 9, 2012: Council for U.S.-Russia Relations partnered with Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle in hosting Arthur George, Partner at Baker & McKenzie LLP in Chicago presenting on "Russia Update: WTO Accession and other Developments in Legal and Business Climate". Mr. George's presentation covered Russia's WTO accession and its impacts for U.S. businesses, upcoming elections and recent legal developments in Russia. November-December 2011: Council sent its letters to U.S. Members of Congress in support of Russia's Permanent Normal Trade Relation (PNTR) status and repeal of the application of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment to Russia. When Russia completes its membership to the World Trade Organization, U.S. companies will be denied the benefits of Russia's WTO provisions unless and until the U.S. repeals Jackson-Vanik and awards Russia PNTR.
